Matthew J.X. Malady is a writer, editor, and attorney living in Berkeley. He serves as Slate's Good Word columnist and writes The Awl's Tell Us More column, which he created and launched in 2013. Matthew's work has also appeared in or on The New Republic, The New Yorker, and The New York Times Magazine, among other publications. Between 2008 and 2014, he served as the editor of Columbia Law School Magazine, where he managed the magazine staff and oversaw all editorial elements of the publication. He remains a contributing editor at the magazine. Before joining the staff at Columbia Law School Magazine, Matthew spent four years as the editor of AVENUE, New York City's oldest, most distinguished, and most widely read society magazine. Prior to his time at AVENUE, he served as the editor of Strong magazine, the 350,000-circulation magazine of the New York Sports Club and its Boston, Philadelphia, and Washington, D.C. affiliates. Matthew's editing work can also be seen in books published by Filipachi and Assouline. He is a summa cum laude graduate of Syracuse University's S.I. Newhouse journalism school and a cum laude graduate of the University of Michigan Law School.
